💍 Selling Your Engagement Ring or Wedding Band: The Hard Truth
Did you know your ring(s) are your separate property???
What what? How?…
Because they are a gift. That’s right your ring(s) are yours and your soon to be ex spouse can not demand them back.
***BUT WAIT! - PAUSE…there’s more….
Now there may be an exception, so your ex may try to claim your ring is a family heirloom…eh whaaat???
That’s right. Now they can claim it but whether it sticks depends on the facts.
The Heirloom Exception
If the ring was a family heirloom (e.x., the groom’s grandmother’s ring passed down through generations), courts may rule that it must be returned to the family line even after marriage.
Judges often treat heirlooms differently because they were never really meant to leave the family, they were “loaned or gifted conditionally” with the intent they stay in the family.
Claims without proof - if there’s no documentation, photos or family testimony, it can be harder to prove heirloom status.

We know this isn’t easy. Rings carry memories, meaning, and emotions but when the time comes to part ways, many people hope their jewelry will help ease financial burdens or fund a fresh start.
Here’s what you should know before selling:
Resale value is often much lower than purchase price.
A ring bought for $10,000 may only sell for $3,000–$5,000 depending on the diamond, setting, and where you sell it.
Retail markup is real. Jewelers charge a premium when you buy, but buyers aren’t willing to pay retail prices when you sell.
The sentimental value doesn’t translate into cash. The emotional weight a ring carries often feels priceless BUT the market sees it as just metal and stones.
Timing matters. If you’re in financial crisis, you may accept less than the ring is worth. If you can hold out for the right buyer, you may do better.
Decide if you want quick cash or max value. Your choice may change which option is best.
Don’t feel guilty.
You’re not selling memories, you’re making space for your next chapter!
